Why Did Maria Hertogh Riots Happen?
After the war, the Hertoghs launched a legal battle for the custody of Maria, their daughter after they received news in 1949 about her whereabouts in Malaya. Later, Maria was sent to stay at the convent. There, Singapore Standard published on its front page a photograph of Maria standing holding hands with the Reverend Mother. There were several more pictures on page 2, under the headline: Bertha knelt before Virgin Mary Statue. The Malay press retorted. The Utusan Melayu published on 7 December three photographs of Maria weeping and being comforted by a nun, as well as articles about Maria's "lonely and miserable" life in the convent, which affected the religious sensitivity.
Upon hearing that Maria (nadra) should be returned to her biological parents on 11 December, the crowd of 2000 to 3000 went outrages and a riot began.

Why did anti-ns riot happpen?
It happened when national service is introduced in 1954. It is when the National Service Ordinance required all males aged between 18 and 20 to register for National Service by May 1954. Offenders who failed to register would be either jailed of fined. Riots happened because the Traditional Chinese belief holds ‘Good men should never be soldiers.’ National Service was not popular with students from Chinese secondary schools because these students were 20 years old as their education had been disrupted by war. The people also do not feel the need to defend the colonial government which did not care for the students’ interests. Therefore, on the day of registration, only a few students from Chung Cheng High School and Chinese High School turned up. The rest all ignored the registration.
